The dam is located in Maiduguri, Borno State, Alau dam was completed in 1988 with water impoundment the same year with a total reservoir capacity of 153MCM, the dam provides water for irrigation, domestic and fishery needs of the communities around it. Rehabilitation works on the dam, including construction of an auxiliary spillway, stilling basin and outlet channel was undertaken in 2003. Dam coordinates are available in the Compendium, Google Earth however does not show any dam at the given coordinates: 5° 25' E, 13° 20'N
